How Teen Driver’s Ed Works

Getting your first Ohio license as a teen takes a few steps. Our online course covers the classroom part, and we’ll walk you through the rest.

1

Enroll in the Online Course

Choose the Teen option when you enroll. Teens can start the online classroom as early as 15 years and 5 months old.

You don’t need your temporary permit (TIPIC) to start the online classroom.
2

Complete 24 Hours of Online Classroom

Work through the lessons, videos, games and quizzes at your own pace, on any device. Your progress saves automatically, so you can stop and pick up right where you left off.

Ohio allows up to 4 hours of classroom instruction per day, so plan on at least 6 days to finish.
3

Pass Your Final Exam Online

When you finish the lessons, take the final exam right from home. No classroom visit needed.

4

Get Your Certificate

Once you pass, your classroom completion certificate is delivered electronically.

5

Get Your Temporary Permit (TIPIC)

At 15 years and 6 months or older, visit an Ohio BMV location to get your temporary instruction permit. You’ll need to:

  • Pass the vision screening
  • Pass the knowledge test
  • Bring your identification documents
  • Have a parent or guardian sign your application
Pro tip: Our course covers everything on the knowledge test, so finish a few units first.
6

Complete Behind-the-Wheel Training and Practice

With your permit, complete:

  • 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed Ohio driving school
  • 50 hours of practice driving with a parent or guardian, including 10 hours at night
7

Take Your Driving Test

After holding your permit for at least 6 months and turning 16, pass the BMV maneuverability and road tests to get your probationary license.
